Volunteer Keeper - Kent
We are looking for dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers to support the care and welfare of our native wildlife collection at Wildwood Kent.
Four-month placements: One day per week, with positions available on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday.
Six-month placements: One running from March to August 2027 and the other from June to November 2027. These placements require a minimum commitment of three days a week
These opportunities are ideal for anyone with a genuine interest in native species, animal welfare and conservation who is looking to gain valuable hands-on experience within a zoo environment.
What will you be doing?
Working under the direction and supervision of our animal keeping team, you will support the daily care and management of a variety of UK native species. Responsibilities will include:
Assisting with food preparation and the distribution of animal diets.
Helping to clean and maintain animal areas and provide appropriate environmental resources.
Following animal welfare, health and safety, biosecurity and animal handling procedures.
Observing animal behaviour and activity, reporting any unusual changes or potential welfare concerns to the relevant keeper.
Supporting keepers in maintaining consistent daily routines and minimising disturbance to the animals.
Researching species-specific behaviours and helping to develop ideas for environmental enrichment and behavioural monitoring.
There will also be opportunities to contribute to behavioural observation, data collection and species research, helping to improve our understanding of the animals in our care and support their welfare.
Who are we looking for?
Previous animal care experience is helpful but not essential. We are looking for volunteers who are enthusiastic, reliable and keen to learn, with a genuine interest in native wildlife and animal welfare.
A willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions, undertake physical tasks and follow instructions carefully is essential. Good observation skills, attention to detail and an interest in animal behaviour and research would be particularly beneficial.
Please note: For insurance reasons, volunteers must be aged 18 or over. All positions are unpaid. Applicants should be able to commit to the duration and weekly schedule of their chosen placement.
