The Saving Devon’s Native Crayfish Education Pack has been developed for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 educators to explore the work of the Saving Devon’s Native Crayfish Project, led by Wildwood Trust with support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

The pack supports learning about freshwater wildlife, habitats and conservation, with a variety of hands-on activities designed to help pupils:

  • Develop observation skills and scientific thinking
  • Understand environmental issues and conservation
  • Explore the impacts of human activity on wildlife
  • Learn about real-world conservation work
  • Understand how projects like Saving Devon’s Native Crayfish help protect endangered species

The activities link directly to the National Curriculum, including Science, Geography and English, and provide opportunities for cross-curricular learning.

The education pack has been designed to be flexible and easy to use across a range of teaching settings.

It can be delivered as a complete programme of lessons or used as a collection of individual activities. The pack is primarily focused on Key Stage 2, with elements that can also be adapted for Key Stage 1.

Each activity includes:

  • Clear instructions
  • Teacher notes
  • A list of resources needed

Activities can be delivered in the classroom, in school grounds, or used to support learning during visits to Wildwood Devon.

This education pack was developed by Heritage, Arts and People on behalf of Wildwood Trust, as part of the Saving Devon’s Native Crayfish Project. The project was made possible with funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and South West Water.

Our thanks go to National Lottery players for making this project possible.

We would also like to thank our partners:

  • South West Crayfish Partnership
  • Bristol Zoological Society
  • Environment Agency

We are also hugely grateful to all our volunteers, landowners and everyone who has supported the project so far.
